I like Wordpress so much that I don’t hesitate to say that if Internet was revolution then Wordpress is evolution.

With free blogs such as blogspot and wordpress.com you don’t have as freedom as with self hosted blogs. The biggest disadvantage is SEO friendly URLs which are not available in free blogs.

Videos are good if they are relevant to the topic. Videos slow down pages and people get distracted in watching them rather than clicking on your ads so certainly you wouldn’t want to insert Paris Hilton home made videos in the middle of your mobile phone reviews would you?

I’m not a big fan of the so called Sales Letter type writing and certainly I loath them. They are no better than “Big earthquake is coming” type of emails which always keep raining in my mailbox.

• Don’t insert Google adsense in the middle of post they are just annoying. Imagine you reading some interesting post and out of nowhere these “How to earn $$$$ per week” adverts appear in front of you and being text advert reader gets lost.

Blog optimization is no different than web site optimization. You can find more resources on SEO on my SEO Blog. The main important aspect of Blog optimization is to do with the content optimization as content is the king in blog.

Blog promotion is the main key. With free blogging platforms you might get some of blog promotion automatically but not completely. For self hosted blog you need to do everything on your own or get professional Blog promoters doing it for you as it is specialized task and requires massive manpower.

Don’t fall in love with those “Performance based SEO services….” type of SEO companies for such services. Chances are your blog will disappear overnight if on Google/Wordrpess.com or get banned by Google if self hosted. Blogs are populated on the Internet in no time and by the time you realize what has happened everything will be wiped out.

There are plenty of them. I almost get one new affiliate contacting me on weekly basis. There are few which are more popular and where all advertisers would go rest are not useful. I’m not writing any review here, reason would be clear from my next topic.

Title tags are very important for Search Engine Optimization and shall not be ignored at all.

Guidelines for selecting good Title tag

• Each page in the website must have unique title tag
• Each title tag must contain the main keywords which are relevant for that page.

E.g. if the page is about Social Media Optimization then title tag must contain Social Media Optimization keyword in it.

• If there are more than one keywords for a page then most important keywords can be included in the title tag.
• The overall length of title tag should not exceed 120 characters as Google ignores any character after that. Theoretically you can have more characters in it but Google and other browsers will ignore them.
• The home page of a website should contain the main categories or important keywords for the whole of website.
• For the sub pages the main keywords should be on the beginning and main website name should be in the last
• Any word in title tag shall not be repeated more than 2 times. You can combine 2 words to have different combinations.
• Since the title tag contains main keywords for that page, make sure that these keywords are included in the Metatag keywords and also in the contents of that page.
• If title words are not included in the metatag keywords and in content then better remove them. As it might be considered as spam since the title tag conveys the main content of that page.
• Don’t use stop words such as followings. The list of stop word is huge. Stop words are ignored by search engines. No need to remember what are the stop words, just focus yourself on main keywords and you don’t have to worry about stop words.

The points below are based on my own personal experience and don’t serve as an Industry standard.

Following are some of the guidelines which one shall follow while selecting relevant URL.

The URLs are case insensitive, the capital letters used in the example URLs are just for better readability.

1. The URL must contain the main keyword. A website containing the main keyword has higher chances of getting higher ranks on Google, MSN, Yahoo and other search engines.

Example: If we have to get an URL for a Web Design related website then we must get URL with Web Design in it. Prefixing/suffixing with another relevant keyword might be a good idea.

2. Main keyword must be in the URL

3. URL shall not be too long. There is no rule for how many characters we can have in the URL. It is depends on common sense.

YouDoNotWantToHaveAnURLLikeThisForYourBusiness.com is certainly not a good URL.

4. If possible keep the Main keyword in the beginning of URL

E.g. WebDesignExperts.com is better than ExpertWebDesign.com

5. If your business is focused to certain countries then you must get country level domains rather than relying on .com provided that .com is not available. Still most of people prefer to have .com domain even if their business is focused on a specific country. As per my observation a country level domain is much more powerful than .com domain.

6. If plain URLs are not available then try to get URLs with hyphen in it

E.g. Web-Design-Experts.com. However don’t add more than 1 or 2 hyphens in URL

Social bookmarking websites are useful for promoting your website or blogs.

Bookmarking is also useful for SEO to get higher ranking in search engines and to achieve Google Top 10 ranking.

In this tutorial I would try to provide a detailed step by step instruction on how to Digg.

Step 1 - Account Creation

Before you start digg-ing you need to create an account. It would be better if you use realistic names as this is all about social networking.

Once precaution to take about the social bookmarking websites is that you should remember your credential, if you looses them then you will end up in creating multiple accounts from same IP address which Social Bookmarking websites don’t like.

Step 2 - Account Verification

After account creation you need to verify the account.

Step 3 - Address Import

You will be asked to import the address, wither skip it or if you wish you can use it and proceed further.

Step 4 - Adding Bookmark

If the website which you are bookarking offer an icon/link to bookmark then it is easy, just click on that icon and enter the details and save it. All done.

Step 4 - Adding Bookmark - Manually

If the website does not have any icon or link to bookmark then you have to do it manually. To do so you need to click on “Submit New” link in the header, enter the details; URL of the news/articles or the web site’s URL which you want to bookmark, select the category from News Article/Image/Video and click on “Continue”. In the next window enter the Title & Description in your own words, select the topic category, enter the Captcha text and click on Submit Story.

The description part is tricky as Digg prompts for a good description which is convincing. So it may take a while before you pass through this step. You have to show your writing skills here

Step 5 - If story is already submitted - Just DIGG it

If Digg prompts stating that story is already submitted then verify it and click on “I swear it is Original”.

If the story is indeed duplicate then you don’t need to submit it but instead you have to click on the yellow button marked DIGG and Digg it.

Following are some of the situations where you might think of going for landing pages.

1) Your main website doesn’t allow you to do much in Search Engine Optimization.
think of a website which is fully in flash with less text and flash are notorious for SEO.

2) Your main website offers more than 1 product/services with focus on one product/group of products/services and you wish to promote other sub-product/services.

Example could be you sell brand new laptops and wish to venture into selling refurbished laptops also then you might think of going for landing pages for refurbished laptops.

3) Pure sales/marketing pages
Such pages are purely for sales/marketing and are created for direct conversion.

4) Language specific pages
This category is also very popular whereas you don’t want to have a full language specific website and settle with landing pages

There are more situations than described above for which you might go for landing pages.

Okie once you decide to go for landing pages then you might think of following SEO techniques for SEO.

1) Don’t fall in trap for single page sales letters as they are popular in America. Rather go for at least 10 pages website with Contact us, about us, terms etc common pages to fill the quota of 10 pages/

2) Keep it simple keep it highly optimize for SEO, use all the SEO techniques which you have learned

3) Keep it focused for single product/services

4) Don’t copy content from your main website, write from scratch and write unique

5) You also need to go for full SEO services for it, viz. link building, search engine submission etc etc…

6) Don’t forget to get links pointing to your main website, after all that is the whole purpose of landing pages - to divert traffic to main website until n unless it is sales letter and you want to get the action on the landing page itself rather than driving traffic to your main website.

Landing pages could be very useful for SEO and to achieve Google top 10 Ranking in less time and effort.

But there are implicit reasons why web 2.0 websites rank higher. I could think of followings

1) C2C (Content to Code ratio) is higher in Web 2.0 websites as they use CSS and no tables. This certainly has an advantage over traditional websites with tables.

Search Engines do like a clean code ain’t they?

2) Web 2.0 designs are attractive and they really do attract visitors more than traditional websites who often bookmark these websites or refer to others or circulate among their friends who in turn bookmark/refer and this whole chain goes on.

3) With pure CSS the websites pages render faster by virtue of having less code and not to mention that Google now consider the speed as one of important factor in SEO.

To sum up I would say that even though there is not direct relationship between Web 2.0 and higher PR but in the background a web 2.0 design is bound to get notice not only by humans but also by search engines. A Web 2.0 design certainly helps you in Search Engine Optimization to achieve Google top 10 Ranking.

Answer: Stupidity

I often come across numerous unsolicited requests to go for 3 way link building. The content of these e-mails are same, which states hey I’ve put your link on website A and could you put my link for Website B on your website.

It seems there is no dearth of brainless people on this Earth who could do anything in the name of SEO.

First of all above is not a 3 way link building but a broad day light deception in the name of 2 way link building. And there are scores of people really believing it is going to work and they actually do such kind of 3 way link building.

The 3 way links, originally, meant to be something as

A=>B (A Links to B)

B=>C (B Links to C)

C=>A (C Links to A)

So overall A and C are linked but no direct link exchange.

I don’t see any benefit of the so called 3 way link exchange, it is as good as getting a link from any relevant page why we need to indulge in such complex relationship.

3 Way links don’t help at all in Search Engine Optimization and certainly you can’t get Google Top 10 ranking by 3 way link building.

Always rely on one way quality links coming from relevant content page.

You are wrong, publishing a blog doesn’t not necessarily always populate your blog on the Internet. You have to promote your blog in the same way as you do for any website.

Each and every blog should have a feed/rss URL, which varies from one platform to another.

For blogspot the feed url can be obtained by simply adding atom.xml at the end of URL

Once way to verify if you have got the correct feed url is to check the URL itself and you should see all the posts in that blog listed on one page. If you see error page then you have got it wrong.

Hunt for Blog Directories/RSS Networks

Next you need to find the list of various Blog Directories, RSS Networks and General Directories which accept Blogs. Not all the general directories accept Blog so submitting to them would be futile.

Precautions

There are plenty of methods available to add social bookmarking icons into your blog/website/web pages. Here is the once which I follow and it is the fastest for me.

Step 1) Visit any website which has the bookmarking icons on it. You can find the code on this post itself

Step 2) View Source, copy & paste the source code for bookmarking tools into notepad or any text editor (I use textpad).

Find the URL, Title and description tags and replace it with your title and description. For this you need to do a global search and replace. This is the most complex part as you need to take care of the space and any other special characters to be replaced by their ASCII Code.

Step 3) Visit the image folders and download all icons and specify the image path folder in the code.

I just caught them displaying Gambling advertisements in sponsored advertisements at 02:30 AM Saturday the 6th April 2008 while searching for keywords virgin poker.com.

There is hell lot of problems with crap Yahoo Search Marketing system. Its whole Editorial Guidelines is nonsense, rubbish and such pathetic that its own ENGLISH TRAINED DUMB Chinese can’t understand and explain to a rational human being.
I’ve been using Yahoo Search Marketing for quite some times and always it has been a pain. But in the past I didn’t deal with dumb Chinese customer support team.

Firstly they would not approve ads, next they will not provide any reason for decline. They would not reply to e-mails either. So you are left with last option to pickup phone and ring them thinking that someone in UK will answer the call. I would expect the call to land in India but it lands in Ireland and guess what it is full with Chinese.

If you are lucky and your call gets answered you will end up in explaining them what went wrong and their obvious answer would be to check with their colleague or it is an excuse to open up English dictionary and find out what to reply..

This time the dumb girl would not even listen to me and keep on speaking like trained parrot.

When I explained that the advertisement with same title and content is being displayed in UK by many other advertisers she would say to delete cookies to get rid of it, lol I never heard such dumb answer from any one in my whole life. I thought of snapping her neck for such answer but rather settled by slamming the phone.

This is not the end of pain with Yahoo Search Marketing, the keywords are highly priced, almost 10 times more than that of on Google AdWords or MS Adcenter.

Yahoo Search Marketing doesn’t display live data. You will see the reports only on next day.

It is slow.

It is no wonder that Yahoo is going to disappear sooner or later either being digested by Microsoft or simply collapses on its own.

P.S. How did I know the call center is full with Chinese without asking them? It is simple, the universal rule; they pronounce r as l.

If you wish to monitor traffic analyze visitor traffic and trend of your website then you will not have any better option than Google Analytics.

Now the million dollar question is does it slow down the page loading?

If you are having a basic html page with few images and some javascripts then you wouldn’t be bothering about the negative effect of Google Analytics at all.

E.g. SwamiSEO website is mostly consists of html, some images and a javascript (the slowest component) and I wouldn’t be bothering even if Google Analytics slows down the page loading a little bit.

On the contrary if we have a dynamic website (backend/database interaction) like SwamiLaptops which has a lots of images then we need to think over affects of GA on page loading.

Being a rational man I don’t take any predefined concepts so I’m going to do experiment to find out if Google Analytics really slows down the page loading or not.

Experiment 1 - SwamiSEO

Without Google Analytics code the front page loading time is about 0.41 seconds with the page size of about 17.09 kb

With Google Analytics code the page loading time remains almost same to 0.41 seconds and page size is 17.26 KB.

Conclusion: Google Analytics doesn’t not slow down the page loading to cause any concern.

Experiment 2 - SwamiLaptops

Without Google Analytics the front page loading time is about 1.12 seconds with the page size of about 80.14 kb

With Google Analytics code the front page loading time is about 1.12 seconds with the page size of about 80.34 kb

Conclusion: Google Analytics doesn’t not slow down the page loading to cause any concern.

Above tests are by no means 100% accurate and done in laboratory environment, but they do provide a first hand conclusion that Google Analytics doesn’t slow down pages considerably.

GA is a small Javascript which is executed every time a page is loaded. Byt its virtue it will obviously take some time to execute a Javascript but I would say that GA doesn’t slow downpage loading to cause any concern.

Google Analytics and High Traffic Websites

If you have got millions of visitors per day then you may see some slowing down of page loading as it is pure mathematics.

Trade off

It is all about trade off between a great tool and page loading. If you don’t have a high traffic website then you should not be bothering about page loading.

For high traffic websites you have no choice but to use GA. Any other tool will also employ some code to be inserted in each and every page of your website which will obviously slow down page loading a little bit.

Best practice for inserting Google Analytics Code

1) Insert Google Analytics Code just before </body> tag.

With this rest of page will render before executing GA code and users may not see any significant affect of slowness if any.

2) Use common page to insert Google Analytics code

The best place to add GA code is in footer files if you have any. If you are using php/asp or any similar languages then it is easy to create a a common footer.php file and add GA code.

Another way is to create a new file name it as google_analytics.php and include this in the footer file.
